What readers are saying about The Entire Animal

'I read The Entire Animal all in one go. I couldn't stop. I was totally immersed. The people were good to live with. The ending was so strong and believable I had that feeling you get when you leave the dark cinema and it's bright daylight outside. It was one in the morning but I was energised. I started making the bread. I had the same feeling when I read Iain Banks's Complicity.' (inpressbooks.co.uk review)

'...the author's ability to weave a story around this central character (Michael) is awesome. I had to re-read several lines, paragraphs...chapters even...because it was so beautifully written. I doubt there's a better debut novel out there.' (amazon.co.uk review)

The boy and his animals is a small collection of psychological, observational and occasionally surreal poetry.

It brings together a number of previously published poems and the cover features an original drawing by Mick Usher.

The collection is dedicated to the memory of Stevie Smith, an English poet who once wrote a poem that began, 'I'll have your heart, if not by gift by knife...'

The boy and his animals

The farm was a place of wonder.
Digging in the stack yard
he found the bones of animals:
cats, dogs, pigs and goats.

He kept the bones in boxes,
laid them out on special days.
He made the shapes of bodies
and he thought them into life.

Such hybrids had never
before been seen on Earth.
Cats grunted, goats purred,
and pigs did tricks.

But his favourites were the dogs,
who sprouted horns,
loved him wildly,
and leapt into the hillsides.
